Vikings have second interview with Kevin O’Connell, next Raheem Morris, DeMeco Ryans

Vikings have second interview with Kevin O'Connell, next Raheem Morris, DeMeco Ryans

The Vikings have targeted at least three finalists for an open head coaching job.

On Monday night, the Vikings announced a second interview with Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, conducted in person in Los Angeles. A source said the Vikings will conduct another in-person second interview later Monday night with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. The source said they also plan to do a second interview this week with San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans.

The three were among eight candidates who went through a virtual interview with the Vikings to replace Mike Zimmer before Kwesi Adofo-Mensah was hired as general manager last Wednesday. Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman were fired on January 10 by Vikings owners Sigi and Mark Wilf.

The second round of interviews includes Adofo-Mensah. The new general manager gave his first interview last Saturday, speaking with New York Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham on Zoom. On the same day, he also took part in a preliminary discussion with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh to gauge his interest in the job. It’s unclear if Harbaugh will have an official interview with the Vikings.

Adofo-Mensah worked with Harbaugh, O’Connell and Ryans while he was in the San Francisco front office from 2013 to 2019. O’Connell and Morris are busy preparing for the Feb. 13 Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals after the Rams defeated the Ryans 49ers 20-17 on Sunday in the NFC Championship Game. Since the Vikings have previously requested interviews from O’Connell and Morris, they are allowed to interview them this week.
