Viral: The emotional moment they found their son being dragged into the sea

MIAMI, Florida – A Key West family known for spearfishing and freediving lost their lives on Thursday and now the entire incident has gone viral on TikTok.

Family members said Dylan Gartenmeyer, 22, was missing at sea for several hours after being caught in the powerful Gulf Stream.

“I had a bunch of bait floating around and everything,” Gartenmeyer said. “I knew the big fish were eating those baits and there were sharks that were going to be soon after them. I was prepared to fight all night, but I’m glad I didn’t have to.”

Dylan’s mother, Tabitha Gartenmeyer, said her family has called Key West home for generations. Tabitha said, “As Key West natives, we love the ocean. I was fishing with Dylan on my belly.”

Dylan said that he has been scuba diving and spearfishing since childhood. “And I do a lot of deep diving, so I like to go over 100 feet in one breath,” he said.

The youth said he was free-diving on Thursday while two of his friends were watching from a boat above.

Dylan told NBC 6 that conditions in the water were getting worse by the minute, so he decided to return to land. But before leaving he said that he wanted to do one more dive. “So I ran outside and that’s where it all started happening,” Dylan said.

“We got a call from my ex-husband,” Tabitha said. He said, ‘Tab, there’s something wrong with Dylan. They haven’t seen him in an hour.’

“And from then on, this feeling came over me, just like that, and I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t speak,” the mother recalled.

Dylan said he was free-diving to about 35 feet when the current swept him into water 150 feet deep. He said he remained under water for about two minutes, holding his breath the entire time.

Dylan said, “That’s how I broke up.” “They were mostly looking down, thinking I passed out from lack of oxygen.”

He told NBC 6 that he re-emerged about a mile from where he originally dived, before swimming to a channel marker exactly a mile away, holding on to a bamboo he held in the water. Found flowing.

“I could see the Coast Guard in the distance to my west. I could see its blue light, the helicopter moving, making a grid pattern,” Dylan said. “My bamboo was starting to slip away from me.”

rescue

Meanwhile, the Gartenmayers were mobilizing their rescue operation. ,[Tabitha] He was very insistent, throw that boat out now,” said family friend Jamie Cook.

Surveillance video from a neighbor caught the Gartenmeyer family speeding into a canal on their way to the ocean to search for Dylan, who they said had been missing for about three hours.

With the US Coast Guard searching by air and sea, Gartenmayer went to Dylan’s last known coordinates. “We had the coordinates he gave us, but apparently he wasn’t on them,” Tabitha said.

Eyes stuck with water, kept searching.

Then Dylan’s friend Joel noticed an unusual sight in the water: buoys that appeared to be attached.

Dylan said that he had cut and tied mooring balls to make a makeshift raft. Dylan said, “I hauled three of them off the reef, tied a little hammock.”

Shortly after seeing the aunts, they saw Dylan. Dylan said, “I was looking west toward the Coast Guard, and I could hear a boat behind me.”

The boat that Dylan heard headed towards him was packed with his family and friends. “My mom took my scuba gear. She hugged herself and started crying,” Dillon said.

Dylan’s cousin, Priscilla Gartenmeyer, filmed the now-viral Tik Tok video. Priscilla said, “It was really emotional for me. So, you know, we know how lucky we are that Dylan is here.”

The family said that through a miracle, Dylan was able to live another day. Dylan said it is something he wants to do again in the near future.
