Volcanic Activity on the Rise on Spanish Island

The Spanish island of La Palma recorded a dozen smaller earthquakes on Saturday as its volcano continued to rumble.

The Department of National Security said the level of activity was similar to that of the volcano recorded in the first days after the eruption.

A small emission point in the volcano’s cone opened on Saturday, according to the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute.

On Friday, lava flowed from a new vent at the volcano, which the Canary Volcanology Institute described as a new “eruption focus.”

Miguel ngel Morcuende, director of the Pevolca response committee, said at a news conference on Friday that the volcano was experiencing “intense activity”. But he also placed the eruption in the context of the wider island.

“Less than eight percent of the island is affected by the volcano. The rest are leading normal lives,” he said.

Officials advised people in parts of La Palma to limit time outside on Saturday.

However, emergency services lifted a stay-home order that was in effect in the areas of Los Llanos de Ariadne, El Paso and Tazacourt, places near the volcano that were affected by poor air quality.

“In response to improvements in air quality measurements in the area, the lockdown will be lifted in Tazacort, El Paso and Los Llanos de Ariadne,” the services said in a statement.

He advised people to avoid spending “prolonged time” outside and said vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, should stay indoors.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano began its fiery eruption on 19 September and destroyed more than 800 buildings. About 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes on the island, which has a population of about 83,000 and is one of the archipelagos that make up the Canary Islands in the Atlantic.
