It seemed too simple. And so it was.
The University of Wisconsin volleyball team dominated Michigan in two sets, but then had to fight to win Friday night at UW Field House to win 25-15, 25-17, 34-36, 25-17.
This win brings the number 5 Badgers (22-3, 14-3 Big Ten) to the top spot with Nebraska, who overtook Pennsylvania on Friday.
Freshman Julia Orzol topped Badgers with 15 kills, while graduate student Dana Rettke made 13 kills and eight locks. Sophomore Jade Demps made her first double-double of her career with 12 kills and 14 digs, while graduate student Grace Loberg added 11 kills.
The Spartans (11-15, 4-13 Big Ten) were led by sophomore Sarah Franklin with 19 kills.
Badgers (22-3, 14-3) did not lag behind until the third set.
The UW dominated the first set, going 9-2 ahead and not looking back. The Badgers scored 0.458 points in the set after four kills against Demp and kept the Spartans down to 0.088.
Set 2 was much the same, with the Badgers opening a 10-4 lead with junior Izzy Ashburn’s three minor aces. The Spartans would have made it interesting as they closed twice to three points and were 21-17 behind before the Badgers closed it with a 4-0 move that included two kills and a block to Rettke and Demps’ ace.
