Every week, publications from 11 properties of the Southern California newsgroup (Orange County Register, LA Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts , Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select Athletes of the Week for their respective region.
Each athlete is then included in the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Shayna Martinez, Lakewood: 5 foot-8 outside hitter/defensive specialist was voted MVP of the prestigious Dave Mohs tournament after leading the Lancers (13-3) to the tournament title. The Lancers are fourth in CIF-SS Division 1/2 this week. Lancers captain Martinez recorded 37 kills and 21 digs in the tournament in the week before No. 1 Mater Dei after losing 14 kills, eight digs and four aces 3–2.
Holly Barker, Laguna Hills: Barker impressed in her cross country debut, winning the Division 3 freshmen race at the 37th Laguna Hills Invitational in 16 minutes, 59.20 seconds, the fastest girls’ time of the day and the fourth fastest in meet history. He also broke Meet’s all-division freshman record and Brianna Bartello’s 2014 school record. Barker races this week at the Woodbridge Invitational.
Sequoia Gonzales, Torrence: Gonzales posted a time of 18:15.3 on the three-mile course at last Saturday’s Rosemead Invitational. His time, a personal record, helped lead the Tartars to first place in the team standings.
Olivia Toland, LA Canada: The senior outside hitter put up a brilliant performance helping the Spartans win the Whiter High School Cardinal Classic tournament. In six games over a two-day period, Toland averaged 14 kills with a high of 17 against La Serna. In the Spartans’ victory over the Palm Desert in the final, Toland defeated the 12 Kilns 25–13, 25–21.
Brooke Mackie, UplandMackie recorded 66 kills and 27 digs in 13 sets to help the Highlanders win the Division 2 championship at the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament in Orange County. He was voted the most valuable player for the division. Mackie scored 16 goals against Carlsbad in the semi-finals and eight goals and eight ducks against St. Margaret in the final. Mackie started the week by tallying a career-high 20 kills in a nonleague sweep of Diamond Ranch in Upland.
Larissa Dukoske, El Camino Real: Royals’ Libero and senior captain Dakoske anchored the team to a Kennedy Irish Clash tournament victory last week, defeating Wally Christian and Riverside King in the Gold Division playoffs. El Camino Real remained unbeaten in the tournament on Wednesday after a 3-0 win against West Valley League foes Chatsworth. Dakoske has an average of 20 digs and six aces per match this season. El Camino Real (14-1) have won 14 matches in a row.
