Walmart rushes hiring with plans to add 150,000 jobs

Walmart Inc. is expanding its hiring push with plans to recruit 150,000 store employees, approaching the busy holiday season with US employers looking for new employees.

Walmart said in a statement on Wednesday that most of the jobs would be in permanent and full-time positions. The hiring target comes on top of a plan the company announced a month ago to add 20,000 supply-chain workers.

The move by the country’s largest private sector employer signals more competition for labor at a time when a tight market is already prompting companies to increase wages and benefits and increase perks. While retail employment has not returned to pre-pandemic levels, the industry is expected to add 700,000 workers this holiday season, according to consultants Challenger, Gray & Christmas. This is a little less than 2020.

Target Corp. plans to add 100,000 seasonal jobs, while United Parcel Service Inc. And FedEx Corp. has a target of 190,000 overall. Inc. is looking to hire 125,000 warehouse and shipping workers.

Walmart, with about 2.3 million employees, did not specify how many new jobs would be seasonal. A year ago, the Arkansas-based company Bentonville said it would recruit 20,000 people to help with holiday shopping. This year, many current employees will likely seek additional hours during the holiday season, and “we will continue to offer those opportunities,” said Julie Murphy, Walmart’s chief people officer for Americas.

The company this month raised its starting salary by a dollar an hour to $12, while the company’s membership-based warehouse retailer Sam’s Club is now paying $15. Target also offers $15 an hour, while Costco Warehouse Corp. sets its starting hourly wage at $16.
