WBB: Huskies Drop Matchup at Texas A&M

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – HCU fell into an early hole and never got out, falling 80-35 to the host Texas A&M Aggies at Reed Arena in women’s basketball action on Monday night.

HCU (1-4) got off to a slow start, falling into a 15-0 hole within the first five minutes of the game while the Aggies (3-1) made five of their first six attempts. on field goals. Texas A&M’s lead grew to 17, 21-4, before a six-point run by the Huskies pulled it back to within 10, 21-11, and the first quarter closed with the Aggies leading 23- 11.

Texas A&M went up by 18 a few times but it was back-to-back buckets N’Denasija Collins and Kennedy Wilson cut HCU’s deficit to just 13, 32-19, with 4:09 left in the first half. The Aggies extended their lead to 20 and led 39-21 at halftime.

Wilson connected on a pair of free throws early in the third quarter to pull HCU back within 15, 40-25, and the Huskies kept things under 20 until Texas A&M went to 25-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Wilson led all players with 18 points, connecting on 8-of-12 from the free throw line, 4-of-11 from the field and 2-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. Collins finished the night with nine points and five rebounds. The Huskies struggled from the floor, shooting 21.7 percent (10-of-46) overall and just 13.6 percent (3-of-22) from three.

The Aggies shot 50 percent (31-of-62) as a team with four players scoring in double-figures. Forward Janiah Barker led the victory with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Aicha Coulibaly also posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

HCU was out-rebounded, 52-23, in the loss and turned the ball over 14 times to A&M’s 11.

The Huskies will return to Sharp Gym on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 6:00 pm to face Mount St. The Lions are coached by former Husky player Maisie Elston.
