We have tested the Hyundai Kona EV: a sensitive electric for autonomy and consumption

While waiting for the new Hyundai Kona to arrive next September, we tested the fully electric version of this small SUV. For the Korean firm, it is a successful model, since it has always remained between the first and second place of the best-selling cars of the brand.

Hyundai Kona was launched in 2017, although in the middle, in 2021, it received an update to touch certain aspects such as its design, technology and equipment. It is a car with a certain urban focus due to its dimensions of 4.20 meters long, a figure that compares in the mid-range with its rivals.

In this sense, the gasoline Hyundai Kona can be compared with models such as the Kia Stonic, Skoda Kamiq, Volkswagen T-Roc, Renault Captur or Nissan Juke, among others. If no release variant is reported, possible competitors are the Peugeot e-2008, Opel Mokka-e, MG ZS EV or Mazda MX-30.

The current generation puts the B-SUV on the same level as the Hyundai Bayon, because both models have very similar dimensions. The new Hyundai Kona that we will meet soon will reach 4.35 meters in length, it will have a new point of differentiation.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Hyundai Kona offers value for money, since its starting price is 23,590 euros for the combustion variant. However, if the option is 100% electric, its value is much higher. Next we are going to destroy all the figures depending on the version.

clean aesthetic

On an aesthetic level, the electric Hyundai Kona presents certain differences with respect to its electric brothers, with a more refined and clean design. The front lacks a conventional grill, and instead has a smooth stop surface with a cover running towards the nerve.

The LED lights have the same shape, but without the connection to the Fender, because in the case of the electric Kona, the whole body is the same color. But to do well with Tecno, the roof can be black.

They have three levels of finishes from the smallest to the most decorated: Maxx, Tecno and Stylus. It is accompanied by a set of 17-inch wheels, with a range of up to 10 colors to choose from. In the case of our test unit, Serenity White looks like (Margarita White).

As for its dimensions, the Hyundai Kona is 4.20 meters long, 1.80 meters wide and 1.55 meters high, proportions that make it a reasonable car to go around the city without problems.

better equipped interior

Inside, dark tones predominate, except for the center console that integrates silver material. On the dashboard we find a 10.25-inch central screen, with buttons on the body to operate a series of functions. The dashboard is fully digital and offers the same size as a multimedia monitor.

One of the reasons we liked the most about the interior of the Hyundai Kona is its ergonomics, because the management and control of the different functions on board is very comfortable. Another practical element is the double floor located in the middle floor, which is used for storage. It remains that we may approach it more conveniently here, since it may be narrower.

Being a small SUV, the rear seats are somewhat tight, a common feature in most cars in this segment. The trunk has a capacity of 332 litres, while the thermal versions have 374 litres.

To hp 204 engines

The electric Hyundai Kona has two mechanical options, one of which is a 39.2 kWh battery associated with a power of 100 kW (136 hp) and a range of 305 km. On the other hand, the option with a maximum capacity of 64 kWh has a power of 150 kW (204 hp) and a range of 484 km.

For both variants, the maximum torque is 395 Nm. In the most modest version, 0 to 100 km/h is done in 9.9 seconds, while the acceleration is the most capable in 7.9 seconds.

A fun electric

More and more fully electric cars are being asked to test, and we have to admit that among all the zero-emissions offers that currently exist, the Hyundai Kona electric is a fun option.

Why do we say this? The Korean model is calm, quiet and calm driving with moderate speed, with great ride quality and good sound. But it is a car that, if you demand speed in any circumstance, it will respond clearly and definitely.

Therefore, the accelerator kicks inward, that is, transmitting many sensations behind the wheel. Because, although all electrics seem to be the same, it is true that some others are “soft”. The electrifying Kona shares what’s going on outside, unlike other cars in its class that are more linear and monotonous.

In addition, this small SUV has three driving modes: Eco, Comfort and Sport, which provide different performance according to the needs of each season. For example, with the Eco option, all parameters are adjusted to optimize autonomy, so that the regenerative braking system is connected.

In terms of consumption, the electric Hyundai Kona is rated at around 16.5 kWh/100 km, although clearly if more economy-focused driving is practiced, that figure can be lower.

In short, it is a very successful car because of the autonomy, the weight, the quality of the finish … also, we must not forget that it has no DGT title, which can be driven without restrictions. But the prices alone could be somewhat high.
