We tested the Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-in Hybrid Q4: Alfa’s first step towards zero emissions autocasion

Alfa Tonale uses in all its versions the same FCA Small Lata 4×4 platform with other Stellar cars such as the Fiat 500X or the Jeep Renegade, although it has been greatly modified in the evolution that receives another Jeep, the Compass. With this, even the narrowest size, Alfa Romeo also has in common with the appearance of this version of the Plug-in Hybrid Q4, the use of a similar 306-volt plug in the hybrid propulsion system, which is not the same.

It is based on both the use of a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a heat index, because it has nothing to do with other plug-in hybrids from other Stellar brands. It has 180 CV and is used to move the front axle through epicyclic gears and turning torques; and the other motor, this one electric, is located on the rear axle, with the purpose of transferring the impulses to these wheels. In this way, without any kind of shaft transmission, this Alfa is all wheel drive. Hence his nickname Q4 in reverse.

It is not the same system as that used by the Jeep Compass or Renegade, while the power of the rear engine used in the Tonal Plug-in Hybrid is higher: it gives 122 CV (90 kW), although the engine. It is almost like that, because its maximum torque is 250 Nm, as in the Jeep.

From this different engine, the total power developed by the system is higher: compared to the 239 CV available in the Jeep, the Tonale reaches 280 CV, a figure reaching below 300 CV. wheel drive group models such as Peugeot 308, Opel Grandland or DS7 and in which, instead of two motors, up to three, one electric one more associated with one thermal one.

This Tonal rear engine is powered by a lithium-ion battery whose cells are distributed between the transmission tunnel and under the rear bench. The capacity is even greater than the Jeep: 15.5 kWh, of which 12 are usable; This is roughly the raw capacity of the Renegade and the Compass. It can charge, in addition to regenerative braking in which the rear electric motor is involved, applying a plug, alternating current with a power of up to 7.4 kW. The estimated minimum reporting time for the battle is thus 2.5 hours.

The drive mode selector can be defined using three settings: Dynamic, Natural and Efficient. In the first, the force of the two motors is always to achieve maximum performance, in addition to making adjustments in direction, accelerator, torque vectoring, etc. in the second, the work of both is fundamentally alternated, as in any hybrid, and it is possible to work together; and in the efficiency of the use of electricity he sought to prevail. It also allows Tonale to coast when he lifts off the accelerator. With the maximum capacity, the proven electric autonomy is 69 kilometers, with only that energy can reach a speed of 135 km/h.

There is also a feature called eCoasting Descent Control that automatically kicks in during descents to maintain a constant speed at 50 km/h.

On the other hand, the E-save function, with the key reset after the change, allows you to recharge or maintain the level of the battery by doing the work of the four-cylinder engine to produce electricity.
