After a 14-year run of ranked-versus-ranked matchups, the Alabama-LSU rivalry has now been shelved after a consideration for two straight seasons.
3 Crimson Tide (7-1, No. 2 CFP) is again a huge favorite against the struggling Tigers (4-4). Alabama handed LSU its most one-sided defeat in the series last year since the 1920s when the Tide won 55-17 in Baton Rouge.
The rivalry returns on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, where LSU’s biggest win — perhaps other than the 2019 national championship game — was two years ago under outgoing coach Ed Orgeron.
Joe Burrow & Co. defeated the Tide 46–41 to break an eight-game losing streak against Alabama.
Alabama-LSU Week 10 is just one more game on the schedule, with only one ranked-versus-ranks matchup, but some intriguingly troubling opportunities.
Just not in Tuscaloosa.
No. 12 Auburn No. 13 Texas A&M. Feather
Both teams are still in the SEC West race, but may not take another loss if they want to hold on to Alabama.
The Tigers are looking for a third straight win against an SEC West rival as they were defeated by Georgia. Tank Bigsby is coming off his best game of the season (140 yards on 23 carries) in a win against Ole Miss last week.
The Aggies are on a three-game winning streak that began with Alabama’s upset.
Sam Hartman, QB, Wake Forest
Senior takes on unbeaten and 10th-ranked Damon Deacon in a non-conference games (yes, really) against North Carolina on Saturday.
Hartmann doesn’t seem to get the buzz of Heisman, but his numbers stack up well with those who are. For example: Alabama’s Bryce Young is fifth in the country in the passer efficiency rating (177.10) with 2,453 yards, 26 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Hartmann is sixth in the efficiency rating (175) with 2,475 yards, 22 touchdowns and three interceptions. Hartman also has six rushing touchdowns to Young’s two.
numbers to know
2 – Iowa State’s winning streak against Texas. The Cyclones had never beaten the Longhorns (4-4) in consecutive meetings before last year and now they have a chance to make it three straight in Austin. Iowa State (5-3) is looking to sabotage Big 12 title hopes.
14-2 – Oregon’s No. 7 record against Washington in last 16 games. Most of them have been blowouts, even two Huskies victories. But the combined margin of wins by ducks in the last two years is seven points.
16 – Purdue’s number of wins against top five opponents, while including No. 2 Iowa last month – the most by any team in the country. The Boilermakers hosted the No. 5 Michigan State.
94 – No. 8 Notre Dame and Navy played for the 94th time on Saturday. The rivalry took a break last season due to the pandemic-changing schedule. The Irish have won three straight meetings and eight of the nine, which is nothing compared to the 43-game winning streak Notre Dame took over the Navy from 1964–2006.
8,752 —- The number of days TCU played a game without Gary Patterson as a member of the coaching staff. 14 Baylor visits the Horned Frogs for TCU’s first game this week as Patterson was ousted after nearly 24 years as head coach and defensive coordinator.
under the radar
Army in the Air Force.
The Falcons (6-2) could beat the Black Knights (4-3) on Saturday to win the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy for the first time since 2016.
The Air Force has already won over the struggling Navy (2-6).
Senna has won the trophy in three of the last four seasons and will retain it by defeating at least the Falcons. If each team wins a game in the round-robin between service academies, it stays with the winner of the previous season.
As always, this is a matchup of two of the best running teams in the country. The Air Force leads the nation at 318 yards per game and the Army is second at 312.
Steve Adazzio, Colorado State
Addazio’s short stint at Colorado State has been rocky almost from the start and has only coached 12 games because of last year’s brief schedule.
The Rams are 4-8 under him, including 3-5 this season. It’s a program that aspires to one day land in a thriving convention, but has been stuck in another level of the Mountain West for a while.
Colorado State is facing a rivalry game this weekend against Wyoming, which is looking to break a three-game losing streak on aggregate. Addazio needs to fix this thing quickly.
