With the 57X, Western Star unveils the latest Hooder flagship for the US. This technique is largely shared between King of the Road and Actros.
With the 57X, the Daimler truck brand is introducing the latest highway flagship for Western Star USA. The hood presents itself in proper style with attractive LED headlights and a chrome radiator grille in barn door format. The glossy appearance is rounded off by accessories like a stainless steel sun visor, chrome-plated exterior mirror cover and chrome clips around the side air outlet, which also sports the XXL Western Star logo.
The beefy appearance is intended to appeal to small fleet operators and classic American owner-operators, i.e. self-employed truck drivers. This target group is also tracking consumption these days. Accordingly, Western Star advertises with the promise that the giant 57X is the most efficient truck ever. Compared to its predecessor – the Western Star 5700XE – consumption has dropped by 5.8 percent. It’s hard to believe given the spacious appearance, but the cleverly designed body panels and optimized aerodynamics with rubber lips contribute to this as well.
Up to 610 hp and 2,780 Nm
When it comes to engines, interested parties can choose between the in-line six-cylinder DD13 Gen 5, DD15 Gen 5 and DD16 from Daimler truck brand Detroit Diesel. This means the base has an average of 375 hp and 1,695 Nm with a displacement of 12.8 liters. Maximum is 610 hp and 2,780 Nm, derived from a generous 15.6-litre displacement.
The closeness of the data to Actros is no coincidence – in the German COP, the diesels have different names, but are almost identical in construction. The same applies to the automatic transmissions, which are available with 10, 13 and 18 gears in addition to the classic manual transmission from Eaton.
Actros. AS assist system and cockpit
In addition to detailed adjustments, the Western Star 57X also shares numerous support systems with its partner models from Mercedes and Freightliner. For example, the standard hood is equipped with adaptive cruise control, which, for example, brakes at a standstill and resumes in a traffic jam. Emergency Braking Assist with Pedestrian Detection There’s also Active Brake Assist 5, a lane departure warning system that actively keeps the truck on and Active Side Guard Assist, an assistive assistant with pedestrian and cyclist detection Is.
The design of the steering wheel and the display in the cockpit are reminiscent of the Actros. Six different views with more or less information can be selected for a fully digital instrument cluster. The smartphone can be mirrored to a multimedia touchscreen in the center console with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The largest driver’s cab with top-notch appliances also comes with comfortable amenities like a two-seater dining area, a microwave and a refrigerator. There is also a spacious wardrobe, LED surround lighting and a 26-inch flat-screen TV.
Series from early 2023
The new Western Star 57X is due to go into series production in the first quarter of 2023 – as a Hauber flagship in the United States. Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) chose the plant in Cleveland, North Carolina for this purpose.
