What a nice day at Thornton Academy

“Perfect fit from the start” – that’s what Marina Jokanovic felt when she first joined Thornton Academy,

Born and raised in Serbia, Jukanovic wanted to pursue her final year of high school education in the US. Her parents agreed, saying it was an excellent idea. She contacted several foreign school agencies before finally deciding on Thornton Academy.

From Djokovic’s first week at Thornton Academy, she was already having an amazing time. “I was extremely excited to meet new people and experience a different educational system,” enthuses Djokanovic. “My first week at school was full of interesting classes and new friends from all over the world.”

Djokovic wakes up every day at 6:45 a.m. and reaches school in an hour. “I walk a short walk from the dorm to the cafeteria, where I meet my friends and have breakfast until the start of class at 8:35,” says Jokanovic.

Djokovic has four classes a day. His favorite section is human geography, as it combines history and geography, connecting us with our daily lives. Once she has her classes, she spends most of her time in the arts wing of the school. It is, as she says, “the highlight of my day.”

Thornton Academy’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts displays more than 35 exhibits each year, allowing students to hone their skills and craftsmanship and translate ideas into beautifully executed work. Students advance themselves with visual arts, dance, music and theater courses.

“Usually something is happening in the arts wing — a rehearsal or maybe an audition,” Djokovic says. “I’ve been a part of Thornton Academy plays. I can’t choose between ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ as both have been unforgettable experiences, forged lifelong friendships and for theater-lovers. Gathered a diverse group.

Jokanovic usually spent a few hours in the arts wing before heading to the cafeteria at 5:30 p.m. for dinner and then returning to the dorm to do some reading.

During the weekend, she would make plans to visit someone’s house with her friends, watch movies, or take an unexpected field trip. After all, Thornton Academy is in a strategic location, just five minutes from the beach, 15 minutes from Portland, and an hour and a half from Boston.

“I love Maine! It is truly a pleasure to be in such a comfortable and peaceful corner of the world,” shares Djokanovic. “I am fortunate to have met people who are willing to show me the true beauty of this state – from famous historical sites to random beaches found on Google Maps.”

For Djokovic, the weekend is all about having fun and getting as much rest as possible. “Overall, weekends are incredibly fun and relaxing. I come back to the hostel just after the curfew at 10:30 because I have a hard time separating from my friends. ,

A best boarding school for all

At Thornton Academy, you can be who you are and be whoever you want to be. The school was voted the best private school in Maine in 2020 and 2021, ranked in the top 2% in the US for high school athletics, and voted among the top five boarding schools in North America.

Djokanovic knows that school has prepared her for her next phase in life, and she has landed a placement at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.

“I plan to pursue a career on Broadway or Hollywood, and I believe the experience I’ve gained by being a part of the Thornton Academy Players will benefit me,” she shares. “Not only have I improved my artistic abilities, but I’ve also learned some important communication and collaboration skills.”

Beijing, China alumnus Jingqi “Owen” Tu can confirm this. He is currently studying physics at the University of Rochester after four years at Thornton Academy.

“Thornton Academy is much more than a school. Yes, the classes are challenging, the curriculum offered is diverse, and the teachers support my learning in many ways, but it is outside the classroom that really makes Thornton Academy so special. is,” you enthuse.
