A survey conducted by Boston University School of Public Health and Sharecare, a digital health company, found that Massachusetts is the state in the country that offers the best opportunities for wellness, meaning it is the healthiest.
New York State, for its part, came in fifth place, while New Jersey was third and Connecticut was ninth.
The results come from a survey of 500,000 Americans in all 50 states in 2022. Physical, social, community, purpose and financial health were some of the categories analyzed during the survey.
They also examined access to health care, food, resources, housing, and transportation, ending with economic security.
The “financial well-being” of the United States has declined over the past year
While the country maintained a very similar score to last year (60.7 on a scale of 100), financial well-being saw a significant decline.
Michael Winter, associate director of statistical programming at the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Data Analysis Center at Boston University School of Public Health, explained that inflation and current economic uncertainty have affected financial well-being.
“This year’s report highlights the importance of considering all aspects of well-being, which go beyond physical health and also include financial stability and socioeconomic factors,” he said in a statement.
These are the 10 healthiest states in the country:
-
- Massachusetts
- Hawaii
- New Jersey
- Maryland
- new York
- California
- Colorado
- Washington
- Connecticut
- Utah
The only difference from last year in this top 10 is that Connecticut was ranked eighth in 2022, but was surpassed by Washington this year.
In the overall list of 50 states, Mississippi ranks last. It’s also worth noting that Massachusetts tops the rankings for the third year in a row and is also the top state in the Access to Health Care category.
