Once the election process has begun, election day is almost upon us; Only 243 days to fly. On that civic Sunday, most of us will wake up with a unique and exciting obligation to make the most important political decision of our lives and perhaps of this entire generation: say for the chamber of deputies and the country that we want by drawing the ballot. the idea of the future of democracy that we have adopted.
By crossing the symbol of our predilection, we voters do so knowing that we are actually expressing our political, economic and social (and even historical) concerns and motivations. In fact, at the polling station, men and women in Mexico will exercise dedicated rights such as the right to vote, to vote, to associate for political purposes, to meet to discuss the state of the country and, of course, the free expressing ideas. .
On June 2, 2024, we must demand that we and the candidates respect the right to democratic governance, good public administration, or competent government, as suggested by Jason Brennan in a wonderful book: “Against Democracy.” , which we have already commented on. on these pages.
In addition to this basic right of the government to act well, that is, at the time and within the framework of public integrity and dignified treatment of all, on that election Sunday we will see and feel the general (planetary) need ) the respect, promotion and defense of the rights of a competent voter.
What is a qualified voter? It is the unmistakable one like Brexit in the United Kingdom, No in Colombia, that brought Chávez to the Presidency of Venezuela or Trump in the United States. It is the one that rejects, condemns and punishes, within the law and the ballot, political violence in all its manifestations, especially against women; as well as the negligence and ineffectiveness of all its assertions. It has the ability to identify political corruption, social populism and financial neoliberalism, criticize them and allow them the instruments guaranteed by every modern constitution: free decision at the ballot box and citizen activism that encourages voting with clear vision, a project for the future and sense of the republic.
If we voters vote wisely and freely, as the best predictions predict, will we become the competent voters that this country, our children, and society itself needs? We have the mandate to try, but also the unwavering right to achieve it, for the good of Mexico, our democracy and future generations, who will not forgive us if we make a mistake.
