Have you noticed the trend of people posting grid-like emoji with the hashtag #wordle on Twitter? This is the latest time-waster to go viral. Here’s what it is and how you can play.
Wordle is a Daily Word Game
Wordle is a daily word game that invites you to try and guess a five-letter word in just six attempts. It’s super easy to play along with once you get the idea, and the fact that it’s a one-time thing means your enthusiasm for it will probably be a matter of weeks or months rather than a downloadable game. In an afternoon you will be drawn in over a hundred levels of monsters.
The game works on both desktop and mobile browsers, with no app download required. Visit the Wordle website and check back each day for the latest iteration.
First, you will be presented with a blank grid, in which you type a word and then press Enter. The letters will change to indicate whether a letter is in the right place (green), in the word but in the wrong position (amber), or not in the word at all (gray).
So if your first guess is “FIRED” and R turns green, E turns yellow, and the rest of the letters are gray, you can guess that the last word has an R in the center position, somewhere in it. E , but does not use F, I, or D. From here you can refine your guess, which you’ll type on the next line.
Tips for Playing Wordle
Everyone’s approach to brain teasers is different, and there is no one strategy you can rely on. The game works best when it boosts your sense of deduction, forcing you to rack your brain for words that use a certain set of letters in specific positions.
That said, there are some tips to overcome. If you guess a letter and it turns green or amber, that letter may appear more than once in the puzzle, so it may be worth keeping in mind future guesses. Do not dismiss any letter until it is grayed out.
Some players prefer to start each day with a new word, others stick to the same basic word that includes lots of vowels and common letters (like ARISE or TEARS) to better refine future guesses .
The main solution is not to waste any of your chances by repeating the letters that turned gray in previous guesses. You only get six chances, though you can always boot another browser or use Incognito Mode.
