NEW YORK (CNN) — Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the birth of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., civil rights leader who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was assassinated four years later.
This year this holiday is falling on Monday, 16 January. It’s a federal holiday, which means government agencies, banks and many corporate offices will be closed for the day.

Non-essential government offices, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, public libraries and city offices will remain closed. State and federal courts will also remain closed. Be sure to check your local guidelines ahead of time.
Postal services
The United States Postal Service will be closed on Monday, so there will be no regular mail delivery. Other delivery services – including United Parcel Service and FedEx – will remain operational, although FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy will have modified services.

The New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ are closed on Mondays. It is a bank holiday, so most banks will not be open.

Major grocery stores including big box retailers such as Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club and Kroger will remain open, as will most national restaurant chains. However, be sure to check with local shops and restaurants, whose hours may vary.
