Despite all the efforts made by Telegram and Signal to win over WhatsApp users, the messenger remains the most popular in this country – and by a wide margin. Even Facebook Messenger has more users than Telegram or Signal. And yet: Some users will no longer have access to WhatsApp from the end of October. Even if you already have Messenger installed on your cell phone, you will no longer be able to use it.
WhatsApp is disappearing from some phones
WhatsApp has a whole host of new features planned for 2022. Among them was the emoji feature, which was long in development. In May, the function was activated for all Messenger users. And while WhatsApp continues to work on bringing advertising to Messenger, which by the way could look something like this, some users are threatened with being shut down in less than 40 days. As early as October 24, WhatsApp will switch off support for many smartphones. The messenger warned of this in May of this year.
WhatsApp is not about the old cell phone. Rather, the focus is on the operating system. If it hit users of the messenger last year who still used a smartphone with Android 4.1, iPhone users are now affected. Anyone who has an iPhone with iOS 10 or iOS 11 will no longer be able to use WhatsApp from October. You can easily find out which version is installed on your iPhone. To do this, tap on “General” in the settings and then on “About”. Under “Software version” you can see the current version.
→ WhatsApp wants to see money: Therefore, users could soon pay voluntarily
If you still have iOS 10 or iOS 11, you can check the settings under “Software update” to see if you can update your iPhone to a newer version. If this is not the case, you will soon no longer be able to use WhatsApp.
The reasons for the end
WhatsApp repeatedly pulls the plug on mobile phones with operating systems that are too old. The reason for this is simple: the outdated operating systems harbor too much attack potential. With the deactivation of the messenger for outdated versions of iOS and Android, the company wants to guarantee the security of the app and the privacy of the users. In addition, the developers want to keep adding new functions to the popular messenger. However, these are often not compatible with all operating systems, which is why problems can arise afterwards. WhatsApp prevents this by pulling the rip cord.
