Citizens of the Somerset neighborhood pay the most property taxes.
While the city council recently decided to limit municipal tax increases to 2.5% in 2024, here is the distribution of these taxes throughout the city.

The clear leader, Somerset, will pay the most property taxes in 2023, by a considerable margin.
Residents and businesses in this part of the city will pay a total of $198.63 million in property taxes in 2023.
The closest neighborhood, Rideau-Vanier, pales in comparison, at $111.86 million.
At the other end of the spectrum, the most rural neighborhood, West Carleton-March, will pay a total of $41.85 million.

The reason for the supremacy of the Somerset district is Very simple
according to the city’s deputy municipal treasurer, Joseph Muhuni.
This is the neighborhood that is the business center of Ottawa. As a result, a large portion of property taxes are paid by commercial entities, which are taxed at a rate nearly double that of residential properties.
Nearly 60% of the property taxes in this neighborhood were charged to commercial properties. The other part is essentially made up of taxes billed to owners of houses and apartment buildings.

Muhini clarified that the federal government makes payments in lieu of taxes to the City, but that these figures vary from year to year.
The City of Ottawa tax breakdown for 2023 includes the following property types: residential, commercial, industrial, multi-unit residential, pipeline, landfill and agricultural land.
If we consider only residential properties, the picture is bleaker.

Rather, it is the Barrhaven-West neighborhood that appears at the top of the list, with residents billed for $74.7 million, well ahead of the Kitchissippi neighborhood.
On the other hand, one thing doesn’t change: West Carleton-March remains at the bottom of the pack.
When it comes to taxes collected on agricultural land, the neighborhoods of Osgoode and Rideau-Jock lead the way.

Joseph Muhuni with the City of Ottawa said that over the course of a year about 99 per cent of municipal taxes are paid. Late payments are made up in subsequent years.
