Why Abbie Utters was ‘excited’ to return to Middleton Girls swimming team, help Cardinals clinch sectional title

Regent senior Bella Grenetzke, who earned Big Eight Conference Swimmer of the Year accolade, won the 200 freestyle in 1:52.50.

Grenetzke swam the first stage in the West Relay victories in the 200 freestyle (1:37.49) and 400 freestyle (3:32.71). Junior Ellen Ostelder also competed on both relays.

West coach Amanda Elmaker said Grenetzke spent time in the YMCA pool during the COVID-19 pandemic, doing everything she could without the guidance of a coach.

“It’s great to see him swimming in his best time this season, not missing a beat and doing really well,” said Almaker, who coached West for five seasons.

Elmaker is also satisfied to see Grenetzke and seniors Avi Lauerson and Quinn Weygundt end their high school careers in the state. The trio also visited the state during their freshman and sophomore season.

Elmaker said he was thrilled that the Regents had a strong effort, especially given that they did not participate during the alternate season.

“If the past year has taught us anything, it’s to be grateful for what we’ve got,” Elmaker said. “We’re back together and doing what we love. It was hard to see all the other teams competing.”
