Each of Gustavo Petro’s children has a story that inspired them to move out of the country, and Andrés Petro is one of the eldest people who accompanied him throughout his campaign and tenure as mayor of Bogota. But then had to stay in Canada for security reasons.
The president’s son explained the reasons for not coming to the country with his father at the inauguration on 7 August at the Plaza de Bolivar, where Sofia, Andrea and Antonella were.
,I am a refugee here in Canada and as a refugee I cannot return to my home country unless I have citizenship or permanent residency, I tried through various means to get a special permit from Canada, but we worked too late and didn’t have time to travel to Colombia,” Andres said in a video on social media.

Furthermore, he said that not being there was a hard blow for him, not only because he was not with his father at a historic moment, but because of the opportunity that he missed seeing the rest of his family.

I am very sorry for not being able to attend, Especially because it was a time when I could see all my sisters and brothers who live in different parts of the world and that is something that is very difficult to replicate. Why is Andres Petro a refugee in Canada?
After being active in his father’s campaign for mayor of Bogota, during his tenure and again in his attempt to become president in 2018, Andres was the victim of several persecutions and attacks, for which he had to seek political asylum in 2019. Canada.
