How are storm names chosen?
The members of the aforementioned Committee propose names of boys and girls in English, Spanish and French languages, which consist of six lists for each basin that are used each year.
After six years, they repeated themselves; This means that the names of the storms in 2023 are the same as those used in 2017 and will be used in 2029.
Will the storm’s name be erased forever?
This is possible under certain circumstances. If a tropical storm causes significant damage, at the request of the affected country, that name is removed from the list and replaced by another with the same initial letter, the same language and gender. This name will be used for six years until the list from which that name was taken is used again.
As examples, the names Katrina, Wilma and Gilberto were permanently removed from the list of tropical storms due to the devastating effects that the first two left in the United States and the third in Mexico.
