Why you should book an Airbnb for two people even if you’re traveling alone

Bright cabins, quaint little houses, luxury apartments – I’ve booked them all through Airbnb.

as travel journalist, I have stayed in hostels all over the world, from the United States and Canada to Western Europe. I prefer to stay airbnbs instead of hotels because they always give me more unique experiences, like sleeping in a tree house in Canada and in a barrel in Switzerland.

Usually, I travel alone. I’ve taken overnight trains in the United States and Europe, spent seven nights on the world’s largest cruise ship sailing the Caribbean Sea, and traveled by train to Niagara Falls, Montreal, and Quebec City. On these trips, I explored new cities and unique places to stay, all by myself.

Now that I’m an experienced solo traveler, I have a lot of practice routines make sure I feel as safe as possible when traveling alone especially in other countries.

When it comes to staying on airbnbs solo, my best advice is to book accommodation for two people

When I make a reservation, I just change the number of guests from one to two. Then in my message to the host, I always say that it is possible for a friend to accompany me on my trip.

This way, the host doesn’t think I’m traveling alone. Creating the illusion that I’m with someone else makes me feel comfortable when I sleep at night at a stranger’s house.

Booking for two sometimes incurs an additional cost, depending on the accommodation.

For example, when I traveled to Rome and booked two nights in an Airbnb apartment with art sculptures, the price was $102 (96 euros) per night for one person and $145 (136 euros) per person. night for two people. In this case, my partner ended up accompanying me during the stay. But even if I didn’t, I wouldn’t mind paying the extra fee to feel safer alone there.

Traveling alone can be scary especially if you book accommodation with an individual rather than directly through a company, as you would with a hotel.
