Wimbledon 2022, Day 7: Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Ons Jabur headline mid-Sunday

This year’s edition of the All England Championship has seen many a first. Ban on Russian and Belarusian players. No marks are to be given. The world number 1 and world number 2 did not set foot on the grass. And now, to add to that series, the middle Sunday of Wimbledon, traditionally a rest day, will continue the action at SW19.

British hope Heather Watson will take on Germany’s Joule Niemeyer in her first fourth-round match at the grass-court major.

Niemeyer’s compatriot Tatjana Maria, who knocked out Maria Sakkari in her previous round of matches, will face 12th seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia.

Third seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia will try to beat Belgium’s Elise Mertens while Czech Marie Buzkova will face France’s Caroline Garcia.

In the men’s circuit, top seed Novak Djokovic is set to take on unseeded Tim Van Rijnthoven as the Serb looks to move one step closer to retain his All England crown.

Janic Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, currently two of the most promising young men in world tennis, will face each other in their round of 16 match on Sunday.

Britain’s ninth seed Cameron Norie will be keen on home support as he prepares to take on 30th seed Tommy Paul of the United States.

American 23rd seed Frances Tiafoe will play against David Goffin in another match.

The sixth day saw some great action with Rafael Nadal reaching the next round of the tournament. Nick Kyrgios emerged victorious in his match against Stefanos Tsitsipas, which proved to be a poor game with both players hugging each other.

Women’s world No. 1 and Wimbledon top seed Inga Swietek suffered a shock defeat to French veteran Alize Cornet, who ended Swietek’s HT streak of 37 straight match victories.

American Coco Gauff was shown the outside door by Amanda Anisimova, while Spain’s Paula Badosa and Romanian Simona Halep advanced to the next round of the grass-court Grand Slam.
