Almost four years after version 5.8, which was released as a beta in October 2018 and therefore never final, the classic media player Winamp 5.9 build 9999 was released as a release candidate. While the beta was intended to ensure compatibility with Windows 10 at the time, Winamp 5.9 now runs on Windows 11.
The first final release in nearly 9 years is approaching
The once hugely popular media player Winamp, which was particularly widespread around the turn of the millennium from American developer Nullsoft, appeared 25 years ago as shareware for Windows 95 and established itself as the standard for playing MP3s. did.
The “old” Winamp had its heyday with the advent of compressed music in the MP3 format and at the turn of the millennium clashed with competitors such as AIMP and Foobar2000, which also had many fans.
But after more than 16 years, Winamp ended in 2013, with version 5.666 from 12 December 2013 remaining the last final version of the media player to date. Now Winamp 5.9 is preparing to inherit Winamp 5.6.
In addition to compatibility with Windows 11, the official release notes list, among other things, better playback of audio streams and podcasts, as well as support for VP8.

In October 2018, Radionomy announced a complete re-release of Winamp 6, but has not yet delivered a finished product.
With “Winamp – The Ultimate Media Player” the company again went on the offensive in September 2021 and was actively seeking beta testers. To date, nothing has changed in this situation and even a public beta is still not visible.
