Wind warning for much of South Australia

A severe weather warning for damaging winds is in place across much of South Australia.

The weather bureau says a cold front moving across from Western Australia will strengthen during Sunday afternoon as it reaches SA’s west.

Damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 kph have been forecast for the west coast and southern parts of the north-west pastoral district, with showers and possible thunderstorms.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Simon Timcke said the “vigorous cold front” will continue to track east, reaching Adelaide in the evening and into the morning.

“We’ve got the potential for some pretty windy conditions as that front moves across and it will also bring showers and some isolated thunderstorms, which will increase the chances of producing some gusty winds as well,” he said.

Mr Timcke said while the risk of a severe thunderstorm in Adelaide was low, the region could expect a total of 20 mm to 40 mm of rain over the next few days.

South Australian beaches could also see higher than average waves over the next few days.

“We’ve got some pretty big waves and high seas on the way,” Mr Timcke said.

Emergency services have warned people to secure loose items around their homes and move vehicles under cover or away from trees.

The State Emergency Service will distribute free sandbags today at a number of locations across the state.

Mount Barker SES volunteers were busy filling sandbags today for collection.

“We’re expecting a lot of rain, a lot of weather conditions for the next couple of days so it’s important to be prepared and to be on the ready for that,” the SES’s Mel Crossing said.
