MADISON, Wis. (NWN) — Johnny Davis scored 15 points with five assists, freshman Chucky Hepburn adds 13 points and ticks a grumpy postgame -Tok as Wisconsin beat St. Francis (BKN) 81-58 on Tuesday night.
Wisconsin jumped to an 11-3 lead with point guard Hepburn scoring Davis on a drive and a pull-up jumper on back-to-back property and adding a drive and a deep 3-pointer during the run.
Hepburn made a driving layup from the St. Francis turnover as the Badgers took an 11-point lead, 23-12, at 9:17 of the first half and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way. Wisconsin-made lead is as large as 32 points.
Hepburn became the first true freshman since Devin Harris in the 2001–02 season to debut in a season opener for the Badgers, and the fifth freshman since 2000 to score double digits in the season opener.
Transferring from George Mason, Patrick Emilion led the Terriers of the Northeast Conference, shooting 8-of-11 and scoring 18 points on five rebounds.
Lorne Bowman dropped three 3-pointers for his nine points. Hepburn, Davis and Brad Davison scored two 3-pointers as Wisconsin buried 10 of 22 from distance, made 13 of 18 free throws and controlled Glass from 48 to 31.
