Woman killed, 3 injured after car plows in protesters in Minneapolis

According to police, a woman was killed and three people injured after a car crashed into Minneapolis on Sunday.

Minneapolis Police Department said in a statement that someone drove protesters into the area of ​​Lake Street and Girard Avenue shortly before midnight, and that the driver was arrested.

In a follow-up statement, police said the injuries to the three individuals were not life-threatening, while the woman, who has not yet been named, died after being transported to hospital.

The driver was treated for injuries, police saidand added that investigators have not yet determined a motive.

A Witness Tells Minneapolis Public Radio that the driver appeared to be speeding when the vehicle approached protesters who had blocked off part of the street.

DJ Hooker told the point of sale that “the car came to us at about 70 or 80 kilometers per hour,” adding that the driver “went even faster when he approached us. You could hear it … start even faster if he comes near us. ‘

Witnesses quoted in the exhaust said the vehicle, a sports utility vehicle, hit a parked car hard enough to cause it to fly to bystanders.

Video posted on social media showed people detaining the injured driver, with a witness saying: ‘He just got through a hundred miles an hour, smashed the car’ and ‘killed’ her. Another video showed the aftermath of the incident, including people restraining the driver.

The Uptown neighborhood where the incident took place was the scene of protests after the U.S. Marshalls arrested a black man, Winston Boogie Smith jr. Earlier this month.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, according to authorities, tried to arrest Smith on the basis of a warrant because he was believed to be a criminal in possession of a gun. The Marshals Service said in a statement that Smith, who was in a parked vehicle, did not comply with law enforcement and manufactured a handgun that resulted in members of the task force firing on the subject. ‘
