Woods: ‘I don’t have much left on this leg’ to compete

NASSAU ( Associated Press) – Tiger Woods paints an uncertain picture of how much golf he can still play.

“There’s not much left in this leg of mine,” the star said Tuesday.

He also doesn’t expect the PGA Tour or a Saudi-funded rival league to improve their relationship unless Greg Norman leaves LIV Golf.

“Not for now, not with your leadership. Not with Greg out there and his hostility to the tour itself,” Woods said. “I don’t see that happening.”

Rory McIlroy also said in Dubai two weeks ago that Norman needed to leave LIV Golf before LIV Golf could have any meaningful talks with the PGA.

Masterfully, Woods dodged other questions on Tuesday, including details of two unexpected surgeries he underwent last year and whether the 20 entrants to the Hero World Challenge tournament should receive world ranking points.

On the impact of LIV Golf, he said the rival league has created friction. Lawsuits currently stand in the way of any reconciliation.

Woods said, “If there’s a lot of animosity in one party, if someone’s trying to destroy our tour, how can we work with that?”

Phil Mickelson was among 10 players who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour in August. Later, LIV Golf took the lead in that complaint.

Bryson DeChambeau, Peter Uhlin and Matt Jones are the only golfers still indicted as plaintiffs. The PGA Tour has since filed a counterclaim.

The trial is tentatively scheduled for January 2024.

Woods said the lawsuits had to be settled or there would be no way forward.

The star is at Albany Golf Club, strictly as host of the World Challenge. He had to retire on Monday due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot, which made it difficult for him to play 72 holes on the relatively flat course.

Woods said he was scoring well in Florida, where he was driving. His next two tournaments, a 12-hole made-for-TV tournament on December 10 and the PNC Championship, which he will attend with his son the following weekend, allow the use of those vehicles.

Woods said, “I can hit the ball and take whatever shot they want.” “I just can’t walk.”

Woods said the plantar fasciitis is related to serious injuries he sustained in a car accident in Los Angeles in February 2021.
