Woody Johnson still trusts Joe Douglas, Robert Saleh

Even though Patriots 54-13 destroyed the Jets in Week 7, Jets owner Woody Johnson still believes in the organization’s new infrastructure.

“I have an unshakable, unshakable trust in Joe. [Douglas], Robert [Saleh] and the coaching staff, Johnson said Tuesday. “I’ve been in business for 22 years now, with my little absence I had recently, and this is a good group. So we will fix everything. ”

Johnson, who returned to directing his struggling soccer team earlier this year after four seasons of absence as President Trump’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, addressed the media at the start of an NFL owners’ meeting in Manhattan.

Johnson described the beating of his arch rival last weekend as “disappointing,” but said his focus was on the red-hot Cincinnati Bengals (5-2) who beat Baltimore Ravens (41-17) in Week 7 and played draw. best record in AFK. The Jets 1-5 under Saleh, who was hired when Woody’s brother Christopher was still in charge of Gang Green and is the new head coach. Douglas was hired in June 2019.

In two seasons with Adam Gus as head coach, the Jets started 1-8 (2019) and 0-13 (2020). But no matter which Johnson is running the show, the Jets have been one of the worst franchises in the league and have had the longest drought in the playoffs (10 seasons and how many).

The last bad start of the Jets is associated with another inept attack and heavy defense. They rank in the top five in terms of points scored and points scored. Their attack did not score in the first quarter of six games.

But Johnson still believes in a long-term plan.

“Just talk to management with Joe and Robert, talk to them and see how their plans are shaping up, how deep thinkers they are,” Johnson said. “I think they want to do things like culture, and they get the right players in the right positions.”

Johnson could have complete confidence in this leadership team, but he could be one of the few.

Former Jets coach Rex Ryan, who had led Gang Green to contract games for the conference title early in his tenure, fell on Saleh after the defeat.

“A complete embarrassment for Robert Saleh and his coaching staff,” Ryan, now an ESPN analyst, said Monday on Get Up! “By the way, guys, that’s what’s scary – they’re leaving goodbye, goodbye! … There is no passion. ”

“You saw a team that the hell knows what they’re doing, the coaching staff with a rookie quarterback, the New England Patriots. This child [Mac Jones] looks like a seasoned pro. Look at the other side, you have a terrible coaching staff with a defender. [Zach Wilson] it looks 100% lost. ”

There’s no question that this shiny new toy didn’t play very well in its rookie year. The freshman quarterback shot 1,168 yards with four touchdowns and nine interceptions, making only 57% of the passes. However, that’s not all about the former BYU star. Offense inconsistencies were seen everywhere, from a shaky offensive line to an inconspicuous running game and ineffective weapons.

In addition, the trauma to the insult is that Wilson suffered a PCL sprain in the second quarter of Sunday’s defeat at Foxboro, which will likely put him out of the game for two to four weeks. But Johnson said he had no concerns about the # 2 overall pick.

“This is a very young team with a young defender. He is 22 years old. He just turned 22, ”Johnson said. “So, he sees things for the first time. Like many young defenders. It will take him a little time, but I trust Zach very much too.

Wilson’s injury prompted the Jets on Monday to trade a conditional sixth round pick for the Eagles for Joe Flacco, because their only backup QB was Mike White, who had his first NFL game when Wilson lost Sunday.

The Jets aren’t much different from what they looked like in 2020 – or for most of the past decade – but at least the boss seems to have complete confidence in Wilson, Saleh, and Douglas to steer Gang Green in the right direction.
