Work Strategies: Giving Gifts to Job Seekers in the Style of 2021

Planning holiday gifts this year is harder than running a covert military operation. Supply chain logistics, timing, finances, personnel – all of this is there. All you need to make things more dramatic is a giant drop-down map with small ship icons to showcase your purchases slowly moving across the Pacific Ocean.

Of course, you shouldn’t be involved in this difficult process. For example, you can relieve the stress of being late with gifts by simply giving them away in January or when you finally have them.

Or, you can skip online shopping and shop locally by choosing your gifts from the inventory you find on store shelves when you go inside.

How about making gifts yourself? Or, of course, there is always the option of sending a gift card as a last (or first) means.

Now that we’ve got this out of the way, it’s time for my annual guide to gifts for those in your life who might be struggling with career challenges or managing your job search. Some gifts are tangible and must be delivered to the recipient by physical means, while others can be “transported” through the magic of technology.

You will also notice that only a few of the gifts are directly related to employment issues. This is because a job seeker on your list may need a break from this important topic; it may be that the best gift is something he or she has been cut from the budget for the time being, rather than something more practical.

Classes. This is one of those “lifelong” gifts that can stay with the recipient far beyond the holiday season. For more bang for your buck, you can also sign up and share your experience. Here are some ideas:

• Skills such as welding or bartending.

• Health sessions such as yoga or meditation.

• Lessons with personal interests such as creative writing or genealogy.

Membership or subscription. For more gifts with long-term impact, consider a membership or subscription that you can enjoy throughout the year, such as:

• Professional association or magazines focused on a specific profession.

• Enrollment in a health club or fitness center.

• Seasonal theater or sports tickets.

• Pass to a state or national park.

• Newspapers, possibly from their hometown.

• Streaming services

Gift Baskets. You can’t go wrong with bringing a basket full of goodies to the door, or a similar option in a _____ month family. For example:

• Food or wine baskets

• Subscriptions to craft or book of the month

• Spa baskets with personal care products.

• Any basket of special treats or promotional notes you make yourself.

Gift cards or certificates. Gifts that can be exchanged for something pleasant or practical are always welcome. In some cases, if you make the gift early enough, recipients on a budget might include it in their holiday plans. For example, a gift card for an upscale grocery store can be turned into an enjoyable dessert on the holiday table. Some other ideas include certifications for:

• Restaurants and other entertainment.

• Personalized services such as a salon or spa.

• Any personal certificate from you that can be redeemed for things like babysitting, home meals, shared day trips, or perhaps use of your vacation home if you have one.

Something personal. Heart-to-heart gifts can go a long way to those struggling with job searches or other challenges. Some options might include:

• carefully selected collection of photographs in digital or printed form.

• Your personal item, such as antique jewelry or art.

• A daily journal or book of inspirational quotes

Gifts related to work or career. If you would like to provide more direct support for your recipient’s job search or career path, these options may fit the bill:

• Career counseling or coaching sessions

• Books or courses on job search strategies.

• Subscription to premium service LinkedIn

• Subscription to Coursera to provide opportunities for certification classes.

In truth, any memory of others this season is a step in the right direction. For those struggling with career challenges or job searches, even a warm email with good wishes will be a welcome boost. So forget about supply chain issues and put on the mindset: the perfect gift for these special people on your list might be right at your fingertips.
