The protests quickly became the biggest challenge to Iran’s theocracy since Iran’s formation in the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Iranian officials have accused foreign actors, particularly the United States, of organizing the protest movement, although they have offered no evidence.

Kurdish-majority areas of the country have seen a wave of unrest amid nationwide anti-government protests. The national team’s defeat for the United States was interpreted by some as a victory over what they saw as government oppression.
