Worst humiliation suffered by Costa Rica at the World Cup

DOHA ( Associated Press) – Costa Rica suffered its worst World Cup defeat.

The 7–0 victory against Spain was the worst result suffered by a Central American team in the six World Cups in which they participated. Their biggest collapse to date was a 5–2 loss to Brazil in the 2002 Japan–Korea World Cup.

And to think that the Costa Ricans came to Qatar with dreams of repeating the feat they achieved in Brazil eight years ago, when they reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup for the first time.

“It wasn’t something we expected, it wasn’t something we wanted,” full-back Kendall Waston lamented.

The Ticos were left in the basement and in a difficult position in Group E, with two games pending against Japan and Germany. The Asians caused an upset by defeating Germany 2–1.

Nothing worked for Costa Rica, led by Colombian Luis Fernando Suárez. The Spaniard practically didn’t let him get the ball and hit him with his attacking aggression. The Ticos didn’t give any serious chances to score.

“fatal!” Waston continued. “You have to get up for the next game against such a painful score.”

Costa Rica was the last team to qualify for Qatar via a playoff and after a complicated tie.

Suarez, who previously led Ecuador and Honduras at World Cups, said the team would fall apart when faced with their commitments in Qatar. The helmsman came out with one forward attacker – Anthony Contreras – and a line of five at the back.

“The ball was not placed the way it should have been. They had it more than us,” Suarez said. “We never had a situation where we threw three or four passes.”

Contreras said, “What happened on the pitch, I don’t know how to explain, it was devastating.” “We came with the mindset to do things well and we prepared well, but it was a bad night.”

“We tried many ways to adapt to the game, but we started poorly and finished poorly,” he said. “It affects us a lot, but there are two games left, which we are going to make the most of.”
