WWE could announce another big event abroad in the next few hours. As the Australian media The West Australian reports, the company will celebrate a show at Optus Stadium in Perth in early 2024. Back in May, it was reported that WWE was looking to bring a premium event to Perth. The local government is said to be “just days” away from announcing the show, which will take place at Optus Stadium.
“The Sunday Times understands the Cook government and the professional wrestling promotion company are just days away from announcing a WWE show at Optus Stadium in early 2024 – ahead of the start of the AFL season at the end of March“ The West Australian wrote on its website.
Optus Stadium has a Capacity of 65,000 people, approximately 60,000 for a wrestling show, taking into account the entrances of the wrestlers, the ramp and the ring area. We’re talking about another big stadium that WWE wants to fill abroad, one of the main goals that Nick Khan put forward a few months ago when the sale of WWE to Endeavor was still finalized.
WWE and Australia are old friends. The company undertook its first national tour in 1985, visiting Melbourne, Perth and Newcastle. The following year a tour of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide followed. Fifteen years later, Australian WWE fans were able to experience live action with the Global Warning Tour, which took place in the summer of 2002.
The last major WWE show in Australia took place in October 2018. The WWE Super Show-Down took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a stadium with 70,000 fans. In the main event, Triple H defeated The Undertaker. In 2019, the company hosted three non-televised events in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
WWE currently airs in Australia on Binge, a Foxtel channel that offers many hours of the product every day. The agreement was concluded in 2022 when Stephanie McMahon held the position of WWE President and was launched in January 2023.
