Yankee rotation adjustment after rain: Luis Severino takes the mound on Tuesday, sixth starter TBD

With three days off as bad weather forced back to back games to be postponed, the Yankees had to rearrange their rotation and would seek help at the end of the week. The Bombers will need a sixth starter for Thursday’s series opener against the White Sox in Chicago.

Nestor Cortes will start against Rangers on a regular sabbatical from Monday. Luis Severino, who was due to start on Saturday, will open a series against the Blue Jays at the stadium starting Tuesday night. Jameson Talon will start the day’s play on Wednesday.

“There were a few different scenarios. If we had played (Saturday) I was going to pitch today,” said Talon. “So I threw a bullpen with that plan and then it rained, so I’m going to pitch one today.” Came today to throw so that I can get ready for Wednesday. I am leaving on my eighth day, Sevy on his ninth day.”

The Yankees will need a sixth starter on Thursday due to a rain-forced doubleheader on Sunday. According to Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake, Clark Schmidt, who was sent down on May 1, pitched in Triple-A on Saturday and would be eligible to return for that start. Also available in Luis Gil Triple-A.

While Michael King has started Spot in the past, the Yankees feel he is too valuable in his role in the bullpen to start and make him unavailable. Especially since the pitching staff will be tested by playing 23 matches in the next 22 days.

“I think we’ll consider it, but we’ll probably have a call up, an internal starter,” said Aaron Boone, “keep Michael flexible in where we put him in that role, whether it’s an important Be- the innings role or giving us three innings strategically in one place. … The coming days, you can always throw a curveball where you have to figure something out, but I expect we’ll call someone for that start .

Severino said he is feeling well, but having lost so much time to injuries over the past two seasons, the Yankees are looking for ways to give him extra rest.

“Puts us in line with some authority against Toronto,” Boone said. “So, nothing more. Just where we can find (rest days) with Savvy, try and do those kinds of built ins from time to time.”

Severino did not face the Blue Jays in Toronto last week.

LOCASTRO to IL . till

Tim Locastro found more than a stolen base last Monday. He put pressure on his left latent muscle. The outfielder, who made his place at his own pace, was injured ahead of Sunday’s game.

“I just slipped a little bit on the bag and used that as my brake to stop,” Locastro said. “But it’s been encouraging, I’m working in the training room right now and feeling great.”

Locastro said he thought it was convulsions at first, but it got worse. He continued to play through that series, appearing in Wednesday night’s defeat. He has lost range of motion in the shoulder, but he expects it to be no more than 10 days.

“It is day by day, but since it is slowly getting better. So it is definitely an encouraging sign,” said Locastro.

With 23 games in the next 22 games, the Yankees decided that it was more important to cover themselves with pitching than the fourth man on the bench. He recalled right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio on Sunday.

“We’ll probably go with smaller benches and extra pitchers for at least a couple of weeks,” Boone said.

The Yankees hope they catch it early to avoid a more serious injury.

“He’s doing really well and was really an active player for us on the last day in Toronto when he was still battling an injury,” Boone said. “He’s responded really well to it and is remarkably functional. … With Latte, we feel like if he plays and hurts him, it could turn into a surgical thing, where We lose him for the season.

“It’s something we’re trying to get ahead with him and … hopefully it’s not more than a few weeks, but it’s probably impossible to tell at this point.”
