Yankees Ace Cole Throws Too Many Pitches in First Spring Game

TAMPA, Fla. ( Associated Press) — Yankees ace Gerrit Cole felt his first spring training start was better than his pitching line.

Cole allowed four runs with five strikeouts and four hits and two-plus innings to run in New York’s 7-4 exhibition win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

The right-hander conceded defeat at the hands of Diego Castillo and Cole Tucker.

“Well, I thought the stuff was great,” Cole said. “When we made good pitches, we got good results. So, I think the amount of first-pitch strikes was very low and count was few that I was left behind. I was wide only a few times. So this kind of culmination left me a little more behind than I’d like today. ,

Coming out of a pair of mock games, Cole threw 29 of 50 pitches to strike. Will pitch once again at Spring Training on an expected opening day on April 7 against Boston.

“I liked what I saw,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “I was really pleased with the quality of his stuff, his fastball. There wasn’t a strike down or the order dialed—exactly how he’s going. I thought he was really comfortable with the delivery. That’s his job.” The burden increased but I thought it was a good day for him to work.”

Cole went 16-8 with a 3.23 ERA in 30 at the start of last season, but was losing pitcher after conceding three runs in two innings in a 6-2 loss to the Red Sox in an AL wild-card game. He was slowed down towards the end of the year due to a left hamstring injury.
