Yankees game postponed after positive coronavirus test

Major League Baseball, with just one game scheduled for Thursday, put the Yankees and Boston Red Sox in the national spotlight at Yankee Stadium and began the season’s nominal second half. Just then an unwanted intruder came on the way.

Two and a half hours before the start, when the Yankees quickly pulled the team off the field and canceled batting practice, MLB postponed the game because of the three Yankees pitchers – Nestor Cortés Jr., Jonathan Loisiga and Vandy Peralta. , each of those who have been vaccinated – had tested positive for the coronavirus. General Manager Brian Cashman said that three other players had tested positive through multiple rapid tests, and the team expected those players’ lab tests to come back positive as well.

The Yankees have reached an 85 percent vaccination rate. MLB is required to operate under relaxed COVID protocols, but Cashman said the team reported success cases again, mostly within the coaching staff, two months after the outbreak of nine cases. had experienced.

“It does not prevent you from contracting COVID; It protects you from the severe, worst-case effects of COVID,” said Cashman. “We are grateful that we have been vaccinated in most cases – not all cases – and so we are ultimately protected.”

The Yankees placed Loisiga on the Covid-19 injured list in Houston on Saturday, and he did not travel with the team after that series, leading to the All-Star break. Cortes and Peralta were placed on the list on Thursday.

Cashman did not know the status of the Yankees’ remaining weekend games with the Red Sox, which are due in New York starting Sunday. Given the two outbreaks the team has now experienced, he said the Yankees would consider a change in protocol.

“We’ll definitely reevaluate everything we do and see if there’s anything we can get better at going forward,” Cashman said. “Those are reasonable questions to ask.”
