NEW YORK (AP). The young filmmaker is also in great demand in the book world. Nick Brooks struck a seven-figure deal for his young adult thriller Promise Boys, in which three boys from a charter school in Washington DC investigate the murder of their principal and learn the harsh truth about their education and society.

According to Henry Holt Books for Young Readers, which announced the deal on Wednesday, Promise Boys draws in part on Brooks’ experience as a teacher with at-risk children. Henry Holt expects to release the book in early 2023.

“This is a social thriller, told through the eyes of black and brown boys, that highlights the inequalities in our education system,” Brooks said in a statement. “This is a story to be told to tell our children who too often fail to advocate for their own interests and inspire them to tell their own story.”

Brooks, 32, graduated from the University of Southern California’s television and film production program last year, where he earned a scholarship after making the short film Hoop Dreamin.
