Zelensky calls for more high-tech weapons from the West

KIEV ( Associated Press) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again on Monday called on Western governments to provide more high-tech weapons to help his country in its war against Russia, withdrawing Russian forces from Ukraine’s occupied territories reiterated his call for evacuation, suggesting that the evacuation would take place at Christmas.

During a video conference, Zelensky told host Germany and other G7 members that “this Christmas it would be right to begin the withdrawal of Russian forces from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine.” A credible cessation of hostilities can be guaranteed if Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine.”

“Moscow’s reaction will show what they really want there: either more confrontation with the world, or finally an end to aggression,” he said.

The Kremlin has rejected all previous calls to reverse its annexation of Ukrainian territory. He did not respond to the latter at the moment.

The two countries have held no peace talks recently and there is no end in sight to the war, which began more than nine months ago and has left tens of thousands dead and wounded and dozens of Ukrainian cities and towns in ruins. Had gone.

Russia illegally annexed parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, including the Crimean peninsula, in 2014, although it does not fully control all of these regions. Zelensky has stated that his goal is to reclaim all occupied territories, while Russian President Vladimir Putin insists on consolidating his military’s control of these areas.

In his speech to the G7, Zelensky reiterated his prime minister’s call for long-range missiles, modern tanks, artillery and missile batteries, and other advanced anti-aircraft systems to repel attacks from Russia, which could be conducted without light and air. The water has gone. Millions of Ukrainians. He admitted that “unfortunately, Russia still has an advantage in artillery and missiles.”

Prime Minister Denis Shimhal told French broadcaster LCI that in addition to inflicting suffering on the Ukrainian people, Russia wants to flood Europe with a new wave of refugees from Ukraine by continuing attacks on power stations and other infrastructure.

Zelensky said that protecting Ukrainian energy facilities from Russian missiles and Iranian-made drones “would be security for all of Europe, because with these attacks Russia is causing a humanitarian and migrant catastrophe not only for Ukraine, but for Europe as a whole.” Is.”European Union”.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said that there has already been a growing demand in his country to house refugees.

“The number of refugees in Poland has (recently) increased to almost 3 million. This probably means an increase in the number in Germany,” Duda said after speaking with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin.

Millions of Ukrainians fled after Russia launched its invasion on 24 February. Thousands of people have died and dozens of cities and towns across Ukraine have been reduced to rubble.

The Russian offensive on Monday again focused on southern and eastern regions of Ukraine.

To deter further attacks, Schmihl reiterated Ukraine’s request for Patriot surface-to-air missiles, a highly sophisticated system. During his interview with the LCI, he also requested more German and French anti-aircraft systems, artillery shells, and re-supply of more modern tanks.

Providing Ukraine with Patriot missiles would be a major step forward in defense systems being sent by the West to help the country repel Russian airstrikes. So far, no country has offered them, as doing so would most likely escalate the war against Russia.

A US official told reporters that the Pentagon currently has no plans to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but that discussions are ongoing. The main issue is that this complex, high-tech system requires a lot of maintenance and training, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss current operations in Ukraine.
